A Samford University debate team compiled a perfect 9-0 record to win the Capitol University debate tournament in Columbus, Ohio, Jan. 17.

Teammates Ashley Streat of Leesburg, Ga., and Jon Mann of Florence defeated teams from Wayne State University, Case Western Reserve University, University of West Virginia, Macalaster College and Augustana College to finish first.

Streat was named the best debater of the 40 individuals at the tournament.

Samford teammates Clarke Bowers of Cahaba Heights and James Phillips of Vestavia Hills won five of seven debates to finish third at the tournament.

This year’s national debate topic deals with the pros and cons of the improvement of U.S. relations with Europe.
